Do you trust your On Call scheduler? *

Whether you know it or not, you are in a partnership with your on-call scheduler... or should be. 

Can you say these about your Physician On-Call scheduler? If yes, please submit him for the Call Scheduler of the Year Award!

  • "Well the tallies are nice to have, but not necessary. Our providers trust the scheduler is right; they know the tallies are fair"
     
  • "We seldom have any weekend swaps, and if something gets scheduled a little tighter than usual, we know our scheduler will make it all right over time."
     
  • "We truly are happy with the current schedule. We just want to automate it a bit to save Dr. D some of his scheduling time and get the results into the physician’s Smartphones".

We started the Scheduler of the Year Award because we thought it would be a great way to celebrate the “hidden heroes” in our medical community who schedule the physicians’ extremely valuable on-call time.  Many consider this a thankless job, but it is an essential role that impacts the daily life and happiness of the physicians, and their families. In many instances, the on-call schedule drives the other scheduling for everything else in the organization!

On Call Scheduler Leadership

Beyond the rules, dayoff limitations and tally time-frames there is the "wizard behind the curtain", the On Call Scheduler.

We've all tried this: create the perfect on call schedule that honors ALL the rules, grants ALL Provider requests, while producing fair tallies and spread EVERYONE can agree with. At some point, we realize there is no such thing as a perfect schedule, that "fair" resides in the eye of the individual beholder, and what is really needed is an honorable schedule that is equitable over time.

Rewarding Your Call Scheduler in a Meaningful Way

How can you reward your remarkable on-call scheduler for his (or her) efforts in a way that can also inspire others? Do they even realize what a meaningful impact their position has within the organization?

After the industry "baseline rewards" of salary, benefits and a few perks to assure "fairness" are met... then what? David Pink’s book “Drive: The Surprising Truth about What Motivates Us” may have some new ideas.
